At first not welcomed by traditional academics and scholars, reenactors brought a different approach to scholarly research. While many scholars sought by their research to add knowledge of the overall course of major events and empires, reenactors sought knowledge of history on a more personal, everyday level. Living history enthusiasts focused their interests on tools, weapons, the home and its furnishings, and most particularly on accurate details of period garb and clothing.

Some reenactors sought to accurately portray the warriors of their chosen period of interest. Research into arms, armour, and military clothing involved reading the accounts of primary eyewitness sources of the period and examination of actual weapons and armour recovered in archaeological excavations.
