Camp Gate Reverse of Constantine II

This is another camp gate reverse type struck in the name of Constantine II while he was still a caesar. The PROVIDENTIAE CAESS legend commemorates the birth of an heir to the throne. The PTRE mintmark places the mint at the Western city of Trier. An interesting note on these mintmarks is that the officina or workshop was denoted by a Latin ordinal in the West (Primo, Secundo, Tertero, Quarto) while the easttern officinae were denoted by Greek letters (alpha, beta, gamma, delta, epsilon, etc.) Under this system, the PTRE mintmark indicates that the coin was struck at the first (P) workshop at Trier.

This type of AE4 with camp gate reverse was struck during the reigns of Constantine I and his sons Crispus, Constantine II, Constans, and Constantius II.

The camp gate device alluded to the strength of the Roman army and the protection it afforded the Roman people against attack by foreign invaders.
