Roman Republican Denarius - Soldiers Throwing Shields at Tarpeia Reverse

The head displayed on the obverse of this coin is supposedly that of the legendary Roman king Titus Tatius, an ancestor of one of the magistrates in charge of issuing the silver coinage for this year. Often, images portrayed on Roman Republican denarii commemorated the role of the family or a famous ancestor of the moneyer rather than representing the city of Rome. Additionally, many legendary historical events are often portrayed allegorically by images on these issues. The reverse of this coin depicts the story of Tarpeia's treason and punishment at the hands of Roman soldiers.
