Carthago - Iberian AE 24

The head portrayed on this coin is the image of Tanit, one of the goddesses popular amongst the Carthagenianians during the period between c. 300 to 146 B. C., when they were at the ascendancy of their power over the Mediterranean economy. Many ancient coins feature a goddess or tree on the obverse and a horse's head or a full bodied horse on the reverse. A coin displaying these devices paired in this way was most probably Carthagenian or struck under Carthagenian authority in one of her colonies or trading cities.
