Obverse of This Coin - Coin List

Constans Small Bronze - 2 Soldiers, 1 Standard Reverse

GLORIA EXERCITVS Type
This coin was struck at the second officina of the Aquileia mint. The initial A is not visible in the photo, so attribution had to be done based on the remaining two letters, QS. The full AQS mintmark may possibly have had an additional symbol to its left, but the centering of what remains tends to indicate that the mintmark was AQS without preceeding symbol. Sometimes it takes a bit of educated guesswork to even tentatively attribute these little coins. The author has decided it is most probably an LRBC number 672. It is quite possible someone who has seen many more of this type than he has would assign it a different number based on features the author missed. That's all part of the enjoyment of sharing numismatic knowledge amongst collectors and students of antiquity. The little piece was well worth the two dollars the author paid for it at the Santa Clara Coin Show in March, 1998.
