Obverse Inscription: GAL VAL MAXIMINVS NOB C

Obtained From: Frank Villalon in 2/94

This is a rather interesting type that was not very expensive and yet is not commonly seen, at least in the author's experience. The hips and legs look like those of a slender youth or a woman, although study of the portrait reveals that it is clearly a male figure. The curious looking object on a pole looks like a medieval mace or morganstern, although, to the author's knowledge, these types of pole arms were not used by the Romans. Like many coins encountered by collectors and scholars, this one presents us with a good mystery indeed!
