The Monastery at Daphne is shaded by two huge trees growing near the main entrance. This building dates from the Sixteenth Century but incorporates parts of older structures. This site has been a monastery since the Fifth Century A. D. Before it became a Christian site, it was the Sanctuary of Apollo.
Demeter was said to have mourned her daughter Persepone beside this well. Persepone had been snatched by Hades and taken to the underworld. Because she had eaten six pomegranate seeds while there, it was judged that she had to spend six months out of every year with him in Hades. Because Demeter was the goddess of the Earth and agriculture, the world had six months of cold weather each Winter when she went ionto mourning.
This pediment and architrave at Eleusis are from Roman times.
